NEVER, EVER FORGET WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU CAME FROM!!!

NEVER, EVER FORGET WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU CAME FROM!!!  I have to write this post because of something that  just  happened to me. I was talking to this young man who is coming into the real estate business and he was asking me all kinds of questions about the business and how I managed to reach "top producer" in my company.

He made me stop and think!I had not thought of this stuff for a very long time and when I stopped to REALLY think about my background, I was amazed at what I remembered. I was amazed because when I sat down to talk to him, I didn't think I was going to be able to shed any light on the topic for him....but I always like to try to help the Newbies that come my way!!! Newbies come to me for advise...and I love to help them!

I went way back to my earliest job; a position that I had asked for at a specialty store in Flint Michigan. I had started out as a secretary at a Doctors office and the woman I worked for was mean and she smoked like a chimney and I was ready for a REAL job. I was tired of the slow pace and the dead-end feeling I had for that job. As much as I loved the Doctors, I was ready to make the change that I knew I needed!

So, I went to the specialty store, Maas of Michigan, and asked to talk to the manager. Her name was Mildred Pierce and boy did she fit the picture of a hard wired "Boss" who ruled the store like an empress. (Betty Davis played Mildred Pierce in a famous movie of the same name in the 50's) She hired me because I asked for the job---behind the front desk! It was killer job in that I never got a break from it.  I literally ran upstairs and down 3 flights, collecting register slips and then taking care of people who were unhappy with their purchases and also ringing up many, many sales. I loved it even though I had never worked harder in my life. I was literally worn out and breathless at the end of the work day.                                                                          Hard Work

ASKING FOR A JOBThat was the beginning of many experiences of asking for what I wanted. The next job was as an assistant buyer in Smith Bridgeman's Department Store, where I went and talked to the manager, Mr. Grahm Dorn, and he hired me on the spot because I asked for the job. Maybe I was so naive that I didn't even think I would not get the job...I was never turned down when I went after a job that I wanted. This happened over and over again over the years and I went to the very top of my field in retailing by asking for the exact job that I wanted.

Now, I never knew that as I was going through it---Never once did I consciously THINK about just asking for the job I wanted--no, it has just now come to me as I spoke to this young man: "I have always asked for the job I wanted to do--no special education to get there--I just went for it." --because I did it impulsively, the impulse to respond was the same and I think that is evidenced by the fact that I was always given the job immediately when I asked for it! In my present day work, as a real estate professional these things are still a part of my persona....I am still able to accomplish what I want to accomplish just by asking for it!!!

To this young man, I owe an enormous amount of gratitude--because as I looked back and dug it up, my background became clear to me: I was an energetic, confident, and hardworking person who was not easily discouraged by the adults around me...no, in fact, they welcomed that about me and they appreciated it as well. At some level, I knew what it was that I wanted to become in life. I didn't lay it out in a plan; I just sprang forward with it in my enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and to work. Southampton New York real estate is where I have arrived! I feel like I have done all the right things and have come a long way to be in a place that is a perfect fit...a fit that has engendered the feeling of success yet again, even in another career. Southampton Village New York is where I have carved out a niche.

My suggestion To any Newbie then becomes: Never, ever forget who you are and where you came from!!!    It is mighty powerful stuff when you look back and dig from the wealth of your experience, no matter how long ago....what might I have said to that young man if I did not remember my history as I did??? I think perhaps I could have faked it and maybe try to make him believe that I magically know what I know because I am special---but I am not. As my father wrote many years ago: "I am a mere translation of myself as all men know me"....and that my dear friends, is the way I see it today!
