THE HAMPTONS, Best Place In The World For A Vacation!!

THE HAMPTONS, Best Place In The World For A Vacation!!

If you are planning a vacation during the Summer or the Fall this year, don't overlook the one spot where you will be sure to have the best vacation ever! Many vacationers come to The Hamptons every summer-they may own a home here or they may rent. Whatever their situation, the level of enjoyment and repeat vacation time spent in this resort area tells you that you can't have a better vacation than right here on the Eastern End of Long Island.

In this article I will cover some of the treasures that I have discovered over the years that I have been here in Southampton. Many of these treasures are in North  Sea, just North of Southampton Village and the place made famous when the first settlers came ashore at Conscience Point--They came from Lynn Massachusetts, separating themsleves from the rest of the first settlers who came to this country in the early 1600's.

But first let me tell you how to get beach stickers in case you want to go to the famous ocean beaches tha dot the Southern Shores of the Eastern End of Long Island

Fishing, hiking, swimming, boating, kayaking, clamming and many other outdoor activities can be enjoyed here....take a long bike ride to Montauk Point; swim in the ocean, take an excursion on a Deep Sea Fishing Boat and take your chance ATLANTIC OCEANat catching the fish of a life time!THE GREAT PECONIC BAY

Every water sport can be enjoyed here on the ocean and bay beaches.

You can buy a beach sticker at Town Hall to be able to freely go to all the beaches in Southampton Town....Located in Southampton Village, Both Town Hall and Village Hall have the ability to sell you stickers for your car. You need your registration and a lease or a deed to get one for free. See the link here to get instructions and fees for getting a sticker: SOUTHAMPTON TOWN FEE SCHEDULES

SAILING IN THE NORTH SEA HARBOR

Hiking in the Hamptons is a well known pass-time. In the following link  you will find the most popular trails here in Southampton.   LONG ISLAND TRAIL LOVERS COALITION

Enjoy the sites of the "wilderness" that is still left here in the same spot where settlers first came ashore in 1640. Conscience point is the one place where you can still feel the beauty of those who came here then from Lynn Massachusetts; this is what they saw when they first came ashore and decided that this would be the place to settle down and plan their future in the New World!

The sign marks the head of the original trail that was used by the earliest settlers. Unassuming and breathtaking in it's unspoiled beauty, Conscience Point is a place NOT to miss when you come here. Follow North Sea Road from the Village of Southampton and go North all the way to the end. Conscience Point is on the right side of the road. Here, there is an unassuming road that goes back in to a parking area where you can park and take the lovely walk to the point of entry.

The earliest families who came to The Hamptons looked for the Bay life to fill their summer vacation needs. Many of these families came from Connecticut, looking for a summer of fishing and quiet enjoyment. Many built their homes right on the inlets and the tributaries that the North Sea Area is known for.  Small fishermen cottages dot the landscape and many have been there since the turn of the 20th century. EARLY FISHERMAN'S COTTAGE  SAIL FISHING AND KAYAKING ARE FAVORITE PASS-TIMES

Back on the road, you will pass the intriguing Salms Estate on the left as you head North towards the Great Peconic Bay.

Oil Tycoon Henry Huttleson Rogers bought 1200 acres and built the Lodge for his family and friends as an escape from the lavish home (Black Point) in the estate section in Southampton Village. It is the location of famous hunting grounds called Cows Neck with its estuaries well stocked for fishing and an intriguing Port for the property, famously called "The Port of Missing Men". There are two explanations for the unusual name of the Salms Estate. One is that "The Port of Missing Men" was named after the 17 men who died in a shipwreck in the port in the early 1800's. There is also another fable about the Shooting lodge and its very popular and world famous waterfront lodge and estate: Since its inception the lodge was a place where large numbers of hunters gather to shoot and enjoy the sporting life. "The Port of Missing Men" is said to be the name that was given to the waterway upon which the lodge is built because of its reputation as place where men "disappear" for undetermined lengths of time as they enjoyed the sporting life! Either or both of these stories have been repeated over the decades to the famous guests of this fabled estate.

Here, men have gathered over the decades to hunt and to enjoy respite from the business world--It is also a favorite of European royalty who have enjoyed frequent pheasant hunting parties over the years. Currently, the Lodge is owned by Willie Salm, widow of Peter Salm who was the son of Millicent Rogers and her Austrian husband. The Lodge is still used during the winters for the remaining family members and their traditional gatherings. There is an extensive history available regarding the Port Of Missing Men and it's most famous owner Millicent Rogers, granddaughter of the famous owner and a society princess from 1900 until her death in 1950.

SALMS ESTATE, "PORT OF MISSING MEN"

The majestic entry to the fabled lodge and estate stands open and welcoming as you drive past it on Norht Sea Road. However, rarely is the public invited into this American Treasure.  Once in a great while Willie Salm will hold an open house in conjunction with the Southampton Historical Museum.

Fund raisers for the museum have been held there with enormous success. The Lodge is a copy of European Shooting Lodges, with an enormous fireplace a the end of the main Hall. There, the family still gathers at certain winter holidays and a tradition from the earliest part of Southampton history becomes real once again.

This is just one part of the Hamptons you  can enjoy--there are many! Watch for other articles as I take you on a journey through the wonderland called The Hamptons!!
